Burberry was founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856 in Basingstoke at the age of 21. In 1880, Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a breathable but waterproof fabric made by waterproofing the yarn before being made into fabric. In 1891, Burberry opened his London store, in Haymarket, the current HQ. At that time, he designed the Tielocken Coat, the forerunner to the modern trenchcoat.

In 1901, Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to design a new uniform for British Officers. The knight on horseback logo was developed and trademarked, at that time. Stores in New York and Paris opened in that frist decade of the 20th century. Amundsen, Scott, and Shackleton, all wore Burberry during their explorations.

The Burberry check was registered in 1920. It was first used as a lining, but Burberry introduced it to the outside of garments and accessories in the 1960s. In 1997, the new management commission new designs and entered the catwalk scene for the first time in 1999. It won the British Classic Design Collection of the Year.

Burberry continues to open stores in major capitals and cities around the world. Burberry is one of very few design brands that have endured and is now in its third century.
